Instructions

An overview of instructions. Please consult the TDS for complete product information.

Application

Furniture, stairs & countertops

  1. Sand the surface scratch-free, up to 120 or 150 grit.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly, eliminate remains of dust with Rubio Monocoat Cleaner and wait until the surface is completely dry (check the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Cleaner before use).
  3. Stir the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Carefully mix the two components (1 to 2 minutes) with a ratio of appr. 3 units A to 1 unit B.
  4. Spread out a small quantity of Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C using the Rubio Monocoat Applicator Set. *Spatula method: evenly spread Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C with a stainless spatula in zones which can be finished within 15 minutes (including step 5). *For ceilings and walls, apply Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C to the surface using a brush and spread using the Rubio Monocoat Applicator Set.
  5. Allow to react for 3-5 minutes. Wipe away all excess oil with a clean terry cloth. Within 10-15 minutes from initial application, perform a final pass using a clean terry cloth, ensuring all excess is thoroughly removed. The surface should be dry to touch upon completion.

Floors

  1. Sand the surface scratch-free according to NWFA guidelines, up to 120 grit.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly then clean remaining dust using Rubio Monocoat Cleaner and wait until the surface is completely dry (check the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Cleaner before use).
  3. Stir the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Carefully mix the two components (1 to 2 minutes) with a ratio of appr. 3 units A to 1 unit B.
  4. Apply the oil to the perimeter of the room. Remove excess oil using a clean terry cloth within 10-15 minutes.
  5. Working in 50-100 ft² (5-10 m²) sections (or areas you can complete within 10-15 minutes), wipe the oil onto the wood and use a white or red buffer pad to equally spread the oil. Continue spreading the oil until the buffer pad no longer forms oil/ colour rings. Complete steps 6 & 7 before starting a new section. *Spatula method: evenly spread Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C with a stainless spatula.
  6. Allowing a reaction time of at least 3-5 minutes, use a clean white buffer pad to remove all excess oil off the 50-100 ft.² (510 m²) section.
  7. Thoroughly remove all excess oil within 10-15 minutes of initial application by placing a clean terry cloth under a clean white buffer pad. If needed, remove all excess oil from v-grooves/bevels and holes by hand.
  8. Continue working in zones you can complete within 10-15 minutes. The surface should be dry to touch upon completion.

Maintenance

Maintenance should be performed using Rubio Monocoat Renew (check the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Cleaner before use).

Repair and renovation

  1. If the Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C treated surface shows much wear and tear, or needs a colour repair, maintain with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C in the original colour.
  2. Use Rubio Monocoat Surface Care Spray to clean the wooden surface. If there are still some stains, try repeating the cleaning process or using Rubio Monocoat Tannin Remover to remove the stain (check the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Tannin Remover before use).
  3. Abrade the wood surface using a buffer with a maroon pad.
  4. Vacuum thoroughly then clean remaining dust using Rubio Monocoat Cleaner and wait until the surface is completely dry (check the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Cleaner before use).
  5. Stir the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Carefully mix the two components (1 to 2 minutes) with a ratio of appr. 3 units A to 1 unit B.
  6. Apply the oil to the perimeter of the room. Remove excess oil using a clean terry cloth within 10-15 minutes. *Spatula method: evenly spread Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C with a stainless spatula.
  8. Allowing a reaction time of at least 3-5 minutes, use a clean white buffer pad to remove all excess oil off the 50-100 ft.² (510 m²) section.
  9. Thoroughly remove all excess oil within 10-15 minutes of initial application by placing a clean terry cloth under a clean white buffer pad. If needed, remove all excess oil from v-grooves/bevels and holes by hand.
  10. Continue working in zones you can complete within 10-15 minutes. The surface should be dry to touch upon completion. Note: High temperatures may decrease working time and low temperatures may increase the amount of time needed for a molecular bond to occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oil Plus 2C safe to use on cutting boards?

We do not recommend using Oil Plus 2C on cutting boards or butcher blocks that will be used for cutting.

Rubio Monocoat oil forms a molecular bond with the topmost microns of the wood. A knife can cut deeper than the product penetrates, leaving raw wood exposed and susceptible to mold and/or bacteria growth.

However, as our product is Food Contact Compliant, it is acceptable to use on charcuterie and serving boards.

Is Oil Plus 2C food safe?

Technically, this asks if the product is safe to ingest, but we understand what you're getting at.

While we do not recommend ingesting our products, it can be safely used on a food contact surface. Testing on Oil Plus 2C from an independent testing institute show Food Contact Compliance.

Is Oil Plus 2C really 0% VOC?

Yes. View our certifications.

How can I add more sheen?

Universal Maintenance Oil can be applied over Oil Plus 2C to increase the sheen level by 6-8%. Universal Maintenance Oil should not be applied to raw wood.

How long does Rubio Monocoat last?

A lifetime with proper maintenance. We would expect the first maintenance to be needed somewhere between 2 and 5 years depending on wear.

To dive a little deep, check out: How long does Rubio Monocoat last?

Can I cover the floors after they have been finished with Oil Plus 2C oil?

Yes, wood floors finished with Oil Plus 2C can be covered with a non-staining construction paper 48 hours after application.

Please remember:

• Never tape directly to the floor.

• Only tape paper to paper.

• Covering the floor will extend the cure time.

How soon can you apply Oil Plus 2C after water-popping?

Once the surface is dry. We recommend using a moisture meter to be sure.

Does Oil Plus 2C work on all species?

Yes.

On exotic and oily species, you must clean with Raw Wood Cleaner prior to applying Oil Plus 2C

Does Rubio Monocoat require a topcoat?

No.

Can I use Oil Plus 2C over our existing finish?

No, Oil Plus 2C must come in contact with raw cellulose in order to properly work.

Can I put lacquer or poly over Oil Plus 2C finish?

We cannot guarantee adhesion, so you must discuss this with the poly or lacquer manufacturer.

Is Oil Plus 2C recommended for exterior?

No, we recommend Hybrid Wood Protector or WoodCream for exterior applications.

Do I have to use multiple coats for certain species of wood?

Because the product will not bond to itself, multiple coats are not needed. On softer species like walnut, a second application may be necessary to make sure that all areas have fully had the opportunity to react with the oil.

Do you have a clear in Oil Plus 2C?

Pure is our unpigmented color. As all oils, it will warm/richen the wood.

The color Natural does contain a light colored pigment.

Read more about Pure vs. Natural.

How do I apply Oil Plus 2C?

Please visit the Oil Plus 2C product page to view application videos and download the TDS.

Additionally, you can view the Application Instructions Brochure.

How many colours does Oil Plus 2C come in?

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C comes in 55 standard colors.

What is the cure time for Oil Plus 2C?

24 hours - Gently handle or walk with socks 48 hours - Furniture can be introduced (no mats or carpets) 5 days - Full cure and liquid resistance.

How long do you have to wait to walk on the floor after applying Oil Plus 2C?

You can walk on the floor with dry socks 8 hours after a proper application. However, it is best practice to wait 24-36 hours before walking on the floor.
